Longer Waiting Period For Divorces In Washington?

In a recent post I talked about whether there is a waiting period in Washington to finalize a divorce.

90 Day Waiting Period

Right now that waiting period is 90 days. It is considered a “cooling off” period to make sure that people don’t rush into getting a divorce.

One Year Waiting Period

Now the Washington State Legislature (Senate Bill 5614) is considering an even longer waiting period — one year.

The one year waiting period could be waived by the court in cases of a violent or sexual felony against the other spouse or child, or where the court finds there has been actual or threatened violence against the other spouse or child.

The bill is scheduled to be heard in committee on February 15, 2013. You can post comments about the proposed change by clicking HERE.
